How to encourage 8 year old third graders to learn and read
I have triplet cousins that are 8 years old, 2 boys and 1 girl. They've been staying over for the summer and we've been trying to get them to learn and read more, instead of playing video games and stare at the computer 24/7. Problems we've ran into: The Girl (Eldest of the triplets)- She doesn't like to read at all or learn math. She only reads and learns because that's the only way we'll let her on the computer. Read first, Do Math, Then computer time. Well, I can't be to sure if she does actually read it or not, maybe she's just sitting there day dreaming. She whines and complains too. Boy 1 (Mid): He doesn't like to read either, but he reads anyway. He doesn't complain or whine, like his sister does. He's read more than the others, too. He just does what he's told, and moves on with what he wants to do for the day. Boy 2 (Youngest of triplets)- The troublemaker. Doesn't do anything that he's told, whether it'd be a basic "go shower" or learning or ANYTHING. He just fools around instead. I would like them to like reading and encourage them to learning new things, and not like hard things, just what an average 8 year old third grader should learn. We don't push them hard. Any ideas that would do that? We've brought them to the library once already, not too long ago, to choose their own books. Still no improvement.

Is it right to show this movie to a class of 8th graders chess related
I am a high school teacher and working this summer teaching 8th graders chess during a "step-up" program where they become familiar with high school and take some math and English classes as well as learning to play chess and some other physical games. I am teaching chess. It is a 5 week program and I am pretty much done with the basics and moving on to strategy and tactics along with openings. Some days it's a 4 hour class and I'd like to mix it up with a movie. I watched Searching for Bobby Fischer a long time ago and remember it as a very good and inspiring movie that was true to the game of chess. My problem is with Bobby Fischer himself. He spewed racist comments and hated the US and praised the actions of terrorists on 9/11. The movie itself isn't about Bobby Fischer, but it does glorify him without mentioning all the disgusting things he said and did. I can't think of a better chess movie, but I have my ethical hang ups about Bobby Fischer and his glorification.

Fun games to play with thirdfourth graders that involves math and reading
I start teaching a class tomorrow, and since it's the first day of summer school, I'm not suppose to jump immediately into the lesson plan as I originally planned, so does anyone have any ideas for educational games I can play with them (it's a class of 23)? I was considering making them a crossword puzzle but I'm not sure if 8 year olds have that much experience with crosswords... Any suggestions would be helpful. :) Thanks

can you please help me out
hi, well this is my story. i have been playing video games, computer games, and all bad things for you mind this summer so far. i decided that instead of video games taking over my whole entire day, i will have at least an hour and a half to do math, reading,... i'm not going to let my mind turn to mush and i want to be ready for 7th grade so i am going into 7th grade (i am not held back and i know i'm a little too young) so first can you please give me some math problems for an incoming 7th grader (fractions, algebra...) also, in october, i learned the order of operations. i forgot the order it goes in though. is it parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division, addition and subtraction? and for kids who recently got out of 7th grade, is it hard. i know every curriculum is different but what is some stuff you learned in 7th grade thanks and have a great summer =] p.s. if you know of any SAFE sites that will help me prepare for 7th grade, it would be greatly appreciated if you posted the link also, i know i should know this but i forgot in this algebra expression, 4 has an exponent of 5 4 (exponent) (8+5) – 4 ÷ 6 = i think i add 8+5 so it look like this: 4(exponent) (13) - 4 ÷ 6 do i do 4 (exponent) x 13 or plus 13?

Names for a storymatch to personalityPLEASE help
I am writing a book and need names (lots!) for all the characters, I will give a personality and you pick a name that you picture for each personality. By the way, they are all 7th graders unless I say otherwise. Setting is at a school. Loves Art. Loves to draw and paint. Doesn't do any sports but she does do dance, and is REALLY good at it. Gets all A's in school, and is very quiet and shy. (Girl, Very Tan, Black Hair and Green Eyes, Average Height) Major Athlete. Does Softball, Volleyball, Football, Wrestling, Basketball, Track, and Tennis. Gets all A's and B's. Popular and lots of friends. (Girl, Tall, Dirty Blonde Hair and Brown Eyes) Pregnant when she is 8th grade (she is 16, had to repeat a couple grades). Doesn't do any sports, and really doesn't have any friends anymore, and all the guys talk about her behind her back and tease her. Teachers think she is weird. (Average height for 16(tall for 8th grade) African-American, Pregnant, red and blonde highlights) That cool teacher everyone (well, everyone that doesn't get in trouble a lot) likes. If you are good student and don't get in trouble, you love her class, if you are a class clown and get in trouble a lot, you hate her. Loves to get the trouble-makers in trouble. Math Teacher. Play math games in her class a lot. The 8th grade basketball and volleyball coach. High school softball coach. Played softball in college. Loves softball. 26, 4th year teaching. Blonde hair and hazel eyes. Boy. Third girls current boyfriend. Sand colored hair and hazel eyes. plays football and baseball and basketball. Popular. What should their names be???? (I need first names and last names, and any nicknames (if applicable), and it can be derived from the name (like Brooke from Brooklyn, Lizzy from Elizabeth etc) or just some random nickname like Motormouth or Turtle or whatever. Also, just list 15 random first names that are other minor characters, aren't important, but are just mentioned a few times. 9 girls and 6 boys. And what the pregnant one wants to name her baby. What should I make my son do this summer when he is failing school
My seventh grader has had a miserable year in school. Academically, he could not have given less to his homework and studying. Last year he was in the top five percent of his class. He rec'd awards for his grades, he is in the gifted program and takes advanced math. I don't know why, but this year he refuses to do homework, I don't think he has opened a text book and refuses to bring them home. He refuses to study. He has pulled a 70 average through out the year. I try to help him every night, I organize his papers and stand over him to make him do his homework. Now that it is at the end of the year he is jeopardy of failing. He is obsessed with Ruin scape (an online game) and you tube, which I have banned him from both. Usually in the summer he goes to a great camp but this year I haven't enrolled him. I have threatened to make him go to work with his father everyday and work in a warehouse. What can I do to make him take it all seriously? He doesn't seem to get that he is on a downward spiral?
